Decedents – 5 – Taotie

Taotie – April 2012
The Chinese dragons fifth descendent Taotie appears as a large wolf with big protruding teeth. Taotie was originally charged with hunting down evil spirits, which he liked to eat. Unfortunately he was overcome with gluttony and started eating people as well to satisfy his hunger. The gods decided to punish him by taking away his body, so that anyone he eats (if they can avoid his fangs) will survive. The Chinese people use his image to decorate bowls and cutlery, as a reminder not to eat too much.
